Why Are Rubber Expansion Joints Used in Hohhot Data Centers?

Recently, Shanghai Songjiang Vibration Absorber Co., Ltd. completed a new batch of limited rubber expansion joints for a data center project in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China.

These rubber flexible connectors are designed for data center cooling-water piping systems, helping to isolate equipment vibration, absorb pipeline displacement, reduce mechanical stress, and control excessive movement.

Rubber Expansion Joints for Data Center Cooling Systems

Modern data centers require continuous and reliable cooling. Their mechanical systems may include:

  • Chilled water pumps
  • Primary and secondary circulation pumps
  • Condenser water pumps
  • Centrifugal chillers
  • Screw chillers
  • Plate heat exchangers
  • Cooling towers
  • CRAH units
  • CRAC systems
  • Dry coolers
  • CDU (Coolant Distribution Unit)
  • Facility Water System (FWS)
  • Liquid cooling pump skids
  • Main chilled-water supply and return headers

Pumps and other rotating equipment can transmit vibration into rigid pipelines. Meanwhile, temperature changes, equipment startup and shutdown, and pipeline installation tolerances can create additional displacement and mechanical stress.

Installing a rubber flexible connector near the equipment provides a flexible transition between the equipment and rigid piping.

Why Use a Limited Rubber Expansion Joint?

The products supplied for this project incorporate an external limit rod/control rod system.

The rubber body can accommodate axial compression, axial extension, lateral displacement, angular movement, vibration, and minor pipeline misalignment.

The limit rods provide additional movement control and help prevent the rubber body from being excessively stretched beyond its designed movement range.

This combination makes rubber expansion joints with control rods particularly suitable for critical cooling-water piping where both flexibility and controlled movement are required.

EPDM Rubber for Chilled Water Systems

For conventional data center chilled-water applications, EPDM rubber expansion joints are frequently considered because EPDM provides good compatibility with water and many HVAC cooling-water applications.

Depending on actual operating conditions, we can also manufacture expansion joints using:

NBR, CR, FKM, CSM/Hypalon, EPDM, and PTFE-lined rubber structures.

Material selection should be based on the actual medium, concentration, temperature, working pressure, design pressure, and chemical additives rather than pipe diameter alone.

Customized for Different Data Center Projects

Our rubber expansion joints can be customized according to project requirements, including:

DN size, overall length, rubber material, flange standard, flange material, pressure rating, movement capability, reinforcement layers, control rods, vacuum reinforcement, and internal flow sleeves.

For data center projects, customers can send us the operating conditions, piping drawings, equipment information, or technical datasheets for evaluation.
